Audubon Zoo
Audubon Zoo, located in historic Uptown New Orleans, offers an exotic mix of animals from around the globe, engaging educational programs, hands-on animal encounters and lush gardens. Unique natural habitat exhibits-such as the award-winning Louisiana Swamp and Jaguar Jungle-showcase the relationship between people and nature. Audubon Zoo is often ranked among the country's best for innovation and entertainment value.
Be sure to experience the African Savannah, Jaguar Jungle, The World of Primates, the Discovery Walk and The Petting Zoo all in one afternoon. Be sure to let our California sea lions entertain you during their shows and head over to the cool Reptile House to visit with snakes, frogs and other amazing creatures. But first, do you dare have an up close encounter with our Komodo Dragon! Experience the authentic Cajun way of life in our one-of-a-kind Louisiana Swamp Exhibit while you visit with Louisiana Black bears, turtles, nutria, alligators, fish, our mysterious white alligator and other exotic animals. Be sure to check out the swamp nursery to see baby critters, too!
The biggest stars at Audubon Zoo are two female Asian elephants, Panya and Jean. Housed in the Whitney Asian Domain, these large ladies captivate visitors with interactive elephant shows, swims in their elephant-sized pool and other ear-flapping, trunk-swinging fun! Be sure to visit other exotic Asian Domain residents including white tiger brothers, Rex and Zulu, and a beautiful, critically endangered family of Amur leopards.
Audubon's Dinosaur Adventure - Journey back in time with giant replicas of prehistoric dinosaurs, moving and roaring, all in environments that resemble their natural habitats millions of years ago. Come see our new dinosaurs and expanded DinoStore!
Gottesman Family Endangered Species Carousel - This beautiful carousel is decorated with oil paintings of our Zoo animals and features a 60-figure menagerie including traditional horses, elephants, rhinos, giraffes and other vanishing species.
Safari Simulator Ride - The hi-tech Safari Simulator Ride projects images on a large screen and moves in sync with each experience (the same way NASA simulators recreate space conditions for astronaut training).
Swamp Train - Take a ride on the Swamp Train and see the Zoo! The train departs every 30 minutes from the Carousel train depot and the Louisiana Swamp Exhibit.
And no trip to the zoo is complete without a visit to the famed Monkey Hill! Monkey Hill was originally constructed by the Works Progress Administration in the 1930s. The intent, legend has it, was to show the children of New Orleans what a hill looks like. These days, Monkey Hill features a five-level treehouse to give visitors a monkey-eye view from the legendary tallest point in New Orleans. There is also a rope bridge, bronze lion sculptures, wading pools and plenty of "room to roll" down Monkey Hill which has been a highlight of a Zoo visit for generations.
