Established in 1787, Destrehan Plantation is the oldest documented plantation in the Lower Mississippi Valley and the one that’s nearest to New Orleans. With costumed guides who know the history of the area and the plantation like the backs of their hands, your tour of the plantation home promises to bring more than 200 years of history to life. By sharing family stories of both the free and enslaved, your guide truly paints a picture of life on the plantation before, during, and after the Civil War.
You are also welcome to visit the plantation’s many outbuildings on a self-guided tour. Through live demonstrations and museum exhibits, you’ll learn more about the enslaved and their way of life. You’ll learn about the 1811 Slave Revolt, as well as the Rost Home Colony where newly freed slaves learned trades and prepared for a life of freedom.
With plenty of ground to cover and several tour options, here is some information to plan your visit.
